TrainForTrade held a Coaching Workshop in Kenya on 12–16 October, during which 18 senior port managers were certified as UNCTAD TrainForTrade instructors. They are ready to support the delivery of Kenya’s first cycle of the Modern Port Management Programme.

The training brought together managers from different divisions of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for an intensive training on modern port management practices. It was an incredibly dynamic and interactive week, filled with group activities, role-playing exercises, lively discussions, and plenty of opportunities to practice and exchange ideas.
The enthusiasm, dedication, and energy of the participants mark an important step toward building local capacity and strengthening port management expertise in Kenya.

At the training’s closing ceremony, Capt. William K. Ruto, Managing Director and CEO of the KPA, encouraged the newly certified coaches to serve as ambassadors of modern port management within the organization and to translate the knowledge they acquired into tangible improvements in service delivery and operational performance.
“Strong ports are built by skilled people. Through this programme, KPA is creating a pool of local experts who will champion excellence, facilitate trade and contribute to Kenya’s economic development,” noted Mr. Mark Assaf, Chief of the HRD section/TrainForTrade.

Fresh from their graduation, the newly certified local instructors will share their expertise with the next cohort, whose two-year program starts on 19 October 2026. It aims to strengthen professional skills, improve port operations, and support sustainable economic development.
A special thank you to Capt. Ruto for his strong support and commitment to the programme, and to Irish Aid and all our partners for making this initiative possible.
